Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin ad captandum vulgus.

Etymology: < post-classical Latin ad captandum vulgus (1686 or earlier) < classical Latin ad (see ad- prefix) + captandum , neuter of the gerundive of captāre to entice, allure (see captate v.) + vulgus vulgus n.¹The phrase ad captandum populum of similar meaning, probably after Latin (the variant ad populum captandum is attested in 1600), is found earlier in English contexts:1645 S. Marshall Strong Helper 50 A shew of Religion ad captandum populum, to awe their people.
