Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Spanish. Etymons: French algarade; Spanish algarada.
Etymology: < (i) French algarade surprise attack (1548 in Middle French as alguerade ; in later use also in extended sense ‘outburst, tirade, altercation’), and its etymon (ii) Spanish algarada hostile incursion, surprise attack (c1289 as †algarrada ), war cry (c1385), outburst, tirade (1534) < algara , †algarra , in same sense (a1263; < Arabic al-ġāra < al the + ġāra raid) + -ada -ade suffix. Compare Portuguese algarada (14th cent.), and also (directly < Arabic) post-classical Latin algara (from 12th cent. in Portuguese sources), algaria (1091 in a Spanish source; with alteration of the suffix after -ia -y suffix3), Portuguese algara (1102).
A hostile incursion, a surprise attack. Later also in weakened sense: an outburst, a tirade.
