Alfurn.

Brit. /ˈalfə/, U.S. /ˈælfər/
Forms:

β. now rare 1800s Arafora, 1800s Arafura, 1800s Harafura, 1800s Harafora, 1900s– Horafora.

γ. 1800s Alafora, 1800s Alfora, 1800s Alfura, 1800s Alfuru, 1800s Alifura, 1800s Halafora, 1800s– Alfuro Brit. /alˈfʊərəʊ/, U.S. /ˌælˈfʊˌroʊ/.

Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Dutch. Partly a borrowing from Malay. Etymons: Dutch Alfoer; Malay Alifuru.
Etymology: < Dutch Alfoer (1797 in the source translated in quot. 1798 at Alfurese n. 1, also †Alifuru , †Halifoer , etc.) and its apparent etymon Malay Alifuru, of unknown origin. Compare German Alfur (1810 as Alfor or earlier; compare †Alfurier , †Alfuresen , †Harafora (all 1806 or earlier)). Compare earlier Alfurese n.A West Papuan origin has been suggested, and in this context Galela Hàléfuru-ka ma njawa , denoting the Alfur people, has been compared with Tidore halé land and furu wild, but this may itself reflect a local folk etymology of a borrowed name. Galela and Tidore are closely related West Papuan languages spoken in the Moluccas. In β. and γ. forms probably partly influenced by and perhaps partly directly < a West Papuan language (compare the ones discussed above). Variation between forms with l and r in the first syllable reflect the phonology of many languages of the region, which do not distinguish between these sounds. The variant Arafura is preserved in the name of the Arafura Sea.
A member of an indigenous people or group of peoples inhabiting Sulawesi, the Moluccas, and certain other islands of South-East Asia.
