Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin ad beneplacitum.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin ad beneplacitum at good pleasure (12th cent.) < classical Latin ad (see ad- prefix) + post-classical Latin beneplacitum good pleasure (Vetus Latina), use as noun of neuter past participle of beneplacere to please (Vetus Latina) < classical Latin benē well (see benign adj.) + placēre to please (see placet int.).Post-classical Latin beneplacitum and beneplacere are used to translate Hellenistic Greek εὐδοκία and εὐδοκεῖν in the New Testament. The form with three words may reflect reanalysis of the expression into the elements classical Latin ad + benē + placitum that which is pleasing (see placitum n.)
At one's pleasure or discretion; at will.Frequently with reference to the holding of or appointment to ecclesiastical, legal, or government office.
