单词 alfilaria
释义

alfilarian.

Brit. /alfᵻˈlɛːrɪə/, /alˌfɪləˈriːə/, U.S. /ˌælfəˈlɛriə/, /ælˌfɪləˈriə/
Forms:

α. 1800s– alfilerilla, 1800s– alfillerilla.

β. 1900s– alfileria, 1800s– alfilaria.

Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish alfilerillo.
Etymology: < Spanish alfilerillo (1789) < alfiler pin (mid 14th cent.; < Arabic al jilāl ) + -illo ( < classical Latin -illus : see -illa suffix), with alteration of the suffix after -illa suffix. In β. forms with further alteration of the suffix after -ia suffix1, probably by analogy with scientific Latin botanical names ending in -eria and -aria . The plants are so called on account of the shape of their carpels. Compare earlier pin grass n. at pin n.1 Compounds 2.The development of the β. forms may have been facilitated by the pronunciation of the suffix -illa as /iːja/ in some varieties of Spanish.
North American.
Any of several storksbills of the Eurasian genus Erodium, esp. E. cicutarium (with bright pink flowers) and E. moschatum (with purple flowers), formerly cultivated as forage plants and now widely naturalized in North America. Also called pin clover, pin grass.
