Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French decisif; Latin decisivus.
Etymology: < (i) Middle French decisif, French décisif definitive, conclusive (1413), (of a person or action) resolute, determined (1652, in the passage translated in quot. 1658 at sense A. 2, or earlier), that shows authority (1689), and its etymon (ii) post-classical Latin decisivus definitive, conclusive (from 13th cent. in British and continental sources) < classical Latin dēcīs- , past participial stem of dēcīdere decide v.1 + -īvus -ive suffix. Compare Spanish decisivo (a1551).With senses A. 1b and A. 2, compare slightly earlier decisively adv. 1b, decisively adv. 2 respectively.
