Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French alexipharmaque; Latin alexipharmacon; Latin alexipharmacus.
Etymology: As noun < (i) Middle French, French (now rare) alexipharmaque (1538 as noun), and its etymon (ii) classical Latin alexipharmacon antidote (Pliny; in post-classical Latin also alexipharmacum) < ancient Greek ἀλεξιϕάρμακον antidote, remedy, use as noun of neuter of ἀλεξιϕάρμακος acting as an antidote < ἀλέξειν to ward off (see alexin n.) + ϕάρμακον poison (see pharmaco- comb. form). As adjective < (i) French (now rare) alexipharmaque (1552 or earlier as adjective), and its etymon (ii) post-classical Latin alexipharmacus (1542 or earlier) < ancient Greek ἀλεξιϕάρμακος . Compare Spanish alexifármaco (1569 as noun, 1574 as adjective). Compare slightly later alexipharmacum n. With the use as adjective compare earlier alexipharmacal adj., alexipharmatical adj., alexipharmical adj.
Chiefly Medicine. Now historical and rare.
