Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Alexandrit.
Etymology: < German Alexandrit (N. G. Nordenskiöld 1842, in 1 p. cxvi) < the name of Crown Prince Aleksandr Nikolaevič , later Emperor Alexander II, of Russia (1818–81; Emperor from 1855) + German -it -ite suffix1. Compare French alexandrite (1847 or earlier), Russian aleksandrit (1851 or earlier).According to Nordenskiöld's account of the discovery and naming of the mineral, alexandrite was discovered on the day when Crown Prince Alexander came of age, and was named in his honour.
Mineralogy.
A gem variety of chrysoberyl which appears green in daylight but may appear red in artificial light; a stone of this variety.
