Etymology: < Alexandrian adj.1 + -ism suffix, partly after German Alexandrinismus (1791 or earlier in sense ‘a word or phrase characteristic of the artificial style of the Alexandrian school of Greek literature’, 1799 or earlier in sense 2, 1835 or earlier in sense ‘imitation of the Alexandrian school of Greek literature’). Compare French alexandrinisme (1838 in sense 2, 1885 or earlier in sense 3).
