Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: day n., man n.1
Etymology: < the genitive of day n. + man n.1 With sense 1 compare earlier daying n.2 and dayment n., and compare also day v.2 (later in senses relating to arbitration). In quots. 1530 and 1535 translating two different Hebrew words with the sense ‘judge, arbitrator’(palil and mōḵīaḥ , respectively). In sense 2b after ancient Greek (Doric) ἐπάμερος, variant (in Pindar) of (Attic) ἐϕήμερος living for a day (see ephemera adj.). With sense 3b compare earlier dayman n.
1. An arbitrator; a mediator. Cf. earlier daying n.2, dayment n. Chiefly archaic and historical in later use.
