Forms: 1600s 1900s– dann, 1800s– dan.
Origin: Of unknown origin.
Etymology: Origin unknown.Apparently originally denoting a marker mounted on a buoy, rather than the buoy itself (compare quot. 1687).
A small buoy, made of wood or inflated sheepskin, supporting a stout pole which bears a flag by day and lamp by night, used either to mark the position of deep-sea lines, or as a centre round which a steam-trawler is worked.

Coal Mining.
A small truck or sledge on which coal is drawn from the workings to the main road or shaft.

Etymology: < the name of Dan, one of the twelve tribes of Israel and of a town in its territory, taken to represent the northern limit of Israelite settlement in Old Testament times.
Used in proverbial phrases to indicate a farthest extremity, esp. in from Dan to Beersheba. (Cf. Judges 20:1, 2 Samuel 24:2, 1 Kings 4:25.)
