to drop one's aitches: to pronounce words beginning with h without aspirating the initial letter, this being a characteristic feature of certain nonstandard dialects (often regarded as a solecism); cf. to drop one's h's at H n. 1a.In quots. 1550 at α. and 1600 at α. apparently with punning reference to ache n.1, which at the time was pronounced in the same way as the name of the letter (see the etymological note at ache n.1).
