单词 cygnet
释义

cygnetn.

/ˈsɪɡnɪt/
Forms: Middle English sygnett, syngnett, Middle English–1600s signett, 1500s singnett, 1500s–1600s signet, 1500s–1700s cignet, 1600s cygnette, 1800s synet, 1600s– cygnet.
Etymology: A diminutive, of English or (?) Anglo-Norman formation, of French cygne or Latin cygnus swan. Old French had the diminutive cignel, cigneau (Godefroy). French cygne is found in end of 14th cent., but the ordinary Old French form was cine, earlier cisne, cinne. Cisne appears to be cognate with Spanish cisne, and Old Italian cecino swan, which Romanic scholars derive < Latin cicinus = cycnus, < Greek κύκνος swan. Latin cycnus appears to have split into two types: *cicinus, found in Plautus (and apparently in late popular Latin), whence the Romanic forms, and cygnus, which was long the accepted form in later manuscripts and texts. Under the influence of the latter Old French cine became cygne (compare modern Italian cigno).
A young swan. In Heraldry see quot. 1825.
