Forms: Old English deorcfull, Middle English derkful, 1600s darkfull, 1800s– darkful; also Scottish pre-1700 dyrkfull.
Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: dark adj., -ful suffix; dark n., -ful suffix.
Etymology: < dark adj. + -ful suffix, originally after classical Latin tenebrōsus dark (see tenebrose adj. and compare -ose suffix1). In later use perhaps partly also < dark n. + -ful suffix.
rare in later use.
Dark; esp. (figurative) filled with moral or spiritual darkness.
