1. A hypothetical alternative version of the right wing in U.S. political history (in the context of speculation about what might have happened if history had taken a different course). rare.An isolated use, now superseded by sense 2.

2003 Re: VDI: William F. Buckley Jr. in soc.history.what-if (Usenet newsgroup) 31 Mar. A right without a Buckley will probably be smaller, and uglier to boot. I would expect this alt-right to be a lot more vigorously opposed to the civil rights movement.

In the United States: a right-wing ideological movement characterized by a rejection of mainstream politics and by the use of online media to disseminate provocative content, often expressing opposition to racial, religious, or gender equality.
