Etymology: < scientific Latin Alstroemeria, genus name ( Linnaeus Species plantarum (ed. 2, 1762) II. 161) < the name of Clas Alströmer , Swedish naturalist (1736–94) + -ia -ia suffix¹.

Any of the numerous plants which constitute the South American genus Alstroemeria (family Alstroemeriaceae), comprising perennials with distinctive resupinate leaves and showy lily-like flowers of various colours; esp. any of the many varieties and hybrids cultivated for ornament; a flower or flowering stem of any of these plants.
