Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French dalaë-lama.

Etymology: < French †dalaë-lama (1692 in the passage translated in quot. 1693, also †dalaé-lama in the same work; now dalaï-lama ), either < Tibetan tā.la'i.bla.ma (16th cent.), or < its etymon Mongolian dalaj lama (although this is first attested later: early 17th cent.) < dalaj ocean (see note) + lama lama n.¹ Compare slightly earlier Grand Lama n. at lama n.¹ 1b.Mongolian dalaj ocean (also used as an honorific epithet ‘great’, in e.g. dalaj qan great khan (13th cent.)), was apparently used here to translate Tibetan rgya-mtsho ocean (also transliterated as gyatso), a traditional epithet for holders of this position. The title Dalai Lama was reportedly first accorded by the Mongolian ruler Altan Khan to Sonam Gyatso (1543–88), who is traditionally credited with converting the Mongols to Buddhism (and who is regarded as the third incarnation of Avalokiteśvara).
