Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly a borrowing from Portuguese. Partly a borrowing from Sanskrit. Etymons: Latin datura; Portuguese datura; Sanskrit dhattūra.
Etymology: Partly (originally) < (i) post-classical Latin datura (1574 or earlier) and its etymon (ii) Portuguese datura (1563) < Sanskrit dhattūra thorn apple, and partly (in β. forms) directly < (iii) Sanskrit dhattūra. Compare Dutch datura (a1598 in the passage translated in quot. 1598 at sense 1), French datura (1598).
1. Any plant of the genus Datura (family Solanaceae), comprising poisonous plants with upright trumpet-shaped flowers and alternate, typically lobed or toothed leaves; esp. the thorn apple, D. stramonium. Also (in form Datura): the genus itself.The native range of this genus is uncertain, with widespread cultivation and naturalization resulting in a broad distribution of species across tropical and temperate regions.Valid publication of the genus name: Linnaeus Species plantarum (1753) I. 179.
