Origin: A borrowing from Wolof. Etymon: Wolof ditax.

Etymology: < Wolof ditax with final velar fricative (compare also former variants ditah, detakh, ditarh, based on English and French spelling systems), regionally also pronounced with /a/ in the first syllable.Compare French détar (A. Jussieu 1789, who also coins scientific Latin Detarium, genus name) < Wolof ditax, probably on account of the phonetic similarity between the final velar fricative and the French uvular r (compare the former Wolof spelling variant ditarh).

A leguminous West African tree, Detarium senegalense (subfamily Caesalpinioideae), which yields hard mahogany-like timber and bears edible fruit, rich in vitamin C.
