Etymology: < German Datolith (J. Esmark, reported in Neues allgemeines Jrnl. der Chem. (1806) 16 108) (formerly also written Datholit , Datholith ); < dat- (in ancient Greek δατεῖσθαι to divide; < an ablaut variant (zero grade) of the same base as δῆμος deme n.²) + -lith -lith comb. form), with remodelling of the ending after -lite comb. form¹.Forms with -th- in the first element (both in German and English) are probably hypercorrect spellings (there is no difference in pronunciation between t and th in German).

Mineralogy.

A boron-containing mineral typically occurring as colourless glassy crystals or fine-grained masses, esp. as a secondary mineral on basic igneous rocks.Datolite is a basic calcium borosilicate, CaBSiO₄(OH). Crystal system: monoclinic.
