Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French alquifoux.
Etymology: < French alquifoux (1697 as alquifou ) < Spanish alquifol (1716 or earlier), variant of alcohol galena, lead sulphide (also denoting kohl and alcohol: see alcohol n.).The form alquifore appears to show remodelling of the final syllable, but the model for this is unclear.
Galena (lead ore) used as the basis of a green pottery glaze, esp. in Spain and France; potter's ore.

1756 R. Rolt New Dict. Trade Alquifoux, or Arquifou, a kind of mineral lead, very heavy, easily reduced to powder, and hard to be melted..as potters use it to give their works a green varnish, it is generally called potter's ore in England.
1797 Elem. Geogr. Nat. & Civil Hist. (ed. 3) ii. §6. 111 In general, the large diced galena is poor in silver, and is used to give a glaze to pottery, by the name of alquifoux, or potter's lead ore.
