Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: cycle n.2, -ette suffix.
Etymology: < cycle n.2 + -ette suffix. Compare French (rare) cyclette (1895 or earlier; probably shortened < bicyclette bicyclette n.). Compare earlier bicyclette n.In motor cyclette perhaps after French motocyclette (see motard n.).
In early use: a type of bicycle. Later: (in full motor cyclette): a type of motorized bicycle or light motorcycle. Cf. bicyclette n. Now rare.The invention referred to in quot. 1889 did not proceed beyond ‘provisional’ patent status and hence there is no published description indicating what kind of vehicle it was.
