Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; perhaps modelled on a French lexical item, or perhaps modelled on an Italian lexical item. Etymons: Alpine adj., -ist suffix.
Etymology: < Alpine adj. + -ist suffix, probably after French alpiniste (1865 or earlier) or Italian alpinista (1864 or earlier). N.E.D. (1884) gives the pronunciation as (æ·lpəinist) /ˈælpaɪnɪst/.
1. Mountaineering. A climber of high mountains, esp. in the Alps. Cf. alpinism n.
