Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; perhaps modelled on a French lexical item, or perhaps modelled on an Italian lexical item. Etymons: Alpine adj., -ism suffix.
Etymology: < Alpine adj. + -ism suffix, probably after French alpinisme (1876 or earlier) or Italian alpinismo (1869 or earlier). Compare earlier alpinist n. O.E.D. Suppl. (1972) also gives the pronunciation (æ·lpəiniz'm) /ˈælpaɪnɪz(ə)m/.
The sport or activity of climbing high mountains, esp. in the Alps, typically involving a small party and ascending from base to summit in a single stage.
