Etymology: < post-classical Latin alethiologia (1764, after German Alethiologie ( J. H. Lambert Neues Organon (1764)) < post-classical Latin alethia (late 2nd or early 3rd cent. in Tertullian) or its etymon ancient Greek ἀλήθεια truth ( < ἀληθής true (see note) + -εία -y suffix³) + post-classical Latin -ologia -ology comb. form.Ancient Greek ἀληθής is < ἀ- a- prefix⁶ + either Hellenistic Greek λῆθος , (Doric) λᾶθος (neuter) forgetfulness (although this is apparently first attested later), or perhaps the corresponding feminine form ancient Greek λήθη forgetfulness (see Lethe n.).
