Etymology: Cognate with or formed similarly to Old Saxon alōsian to detach, Middle Low German erlȫsen to detach, to release, relieve, redeem, deliver, Old High German irlōsen , arlōsen to release, relieve, redeem, deliver (Middle High German erlœ̄sen , German erlösen ) < the Germanic base of or- prefix (compare a- prefix1) + the Germanic base of leese v.2 The specifically Christian senses of the Germanic verbs are after the corresponding post-classical Latin uses of classical Latin redimere redeem v.In Old English the word had a wider range of senses than in Middle English, e.g. ‘to deliver, release, free, rescue, save, to cure, to purchase the release of, ransom, to expiate, to detach, remove, to discharge, pay’. In Middle English the word and its derivatives survive chiefly in their religious senses.
