Etymology: < Middle French alerion, allerion (French alérion ) mythical large bird without feet, resembling an eagle (1131 in Old French), heraldic representation of a bird with neither feet nor beak (1581 as allerion ) < an (unattested) Frankish form ultimately cognate with Middle Dutch adelaer , adeler (Dutch adelaar ), Middle Low German adeler , Old High German adalaro (Middle High German adelar , adeler , adler , German Adler ), all in sense ‘eagle’, all < the Germanic base of athel adj. + the Germanic base of erne n., the eagle receiving the epithet ‘noble’ in recognition of its majestic appearance and its widespread use in hunting. Compare post-classical Latin alarion-, alario, denoting a large bird of prey of the eagle kind (12th cent. in British sources), Italian alerione heraldic representation of a bird with neither feet nor beak (1623).

1694 J. Beaumont Present State of Universe 17 The Dukal and Sovereign House of Lorain contains many Escutcheons, over all Or, a Bend Gules, charged with three Alerions Argent.
1731 N. Bailey Universal Etymol. Eng. Dict. (ed. 5) Allerions (in Heraldry) are small birds painted without beak or feet, like the martlet or martinet. Others say they are like eagles without beak or feet.
