Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish alerce.
Etymology: < Spanish alerce (1748 in this sense), extended use of alerce, denoting the European larch (a1618 in this sense; for earlier attestations in translations of the Bible, see below) < classical Latin laric- , larix larch n.The Spanish noun is attested in c1280 in sense ‘shittim tree’ (rendering post-classical Latin setim , settim , setthim shittim n.), and frequently from the first half of the 14th cent. in sense ‘cedar’ (rendering classical Latin cedrus cedar n.), earliest as †alerze.
A very large evergreen cypress, Fitzroya cupressoides, native to temperate South America, with deeply furrowed reddish-brown fibrous bark and scale-like leaves. Also: the valuable, decay-resistant timber obtained from this tree, typically used for construction.The natural population of alerce was much reduced by extensive logging between the 18th and 20th centuries, and it is now considered to be an endangered species.
