Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin alembication-, alembicatio.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin alembication-, alembicatio (1522 or earlier) < alembicus , alembicum alembic n. + classical Latin -ātiō -ation suffix. Compare Middle French or French †allambiquement distillation (1614), French alambiquage excessive subtlety (1835 or earlier). Compare slightly later alembicate v.Post-classical Latin alembicare ‘to refine, distil’ is apparently first attested later than alembicatio (1553 or earlier).
