Forms: In Old English Denisc; Middle English Denshe, Dench, Danshe; 1500s Scottish Dence, Dens, Densch. Also Middle English Danais, Danoys, and 1500s–1600s Dansk adj.
Etymology: Old English Dęnisc < Old Germanic *danisk-, whence Old Norse Danskr , < Dani- , Dęne , Danes + -ish suffix1. Thence Middle English Densh , etc. In Danish , the vowel is changed as in Dane n. The Middle English Danais was immediately from Old French daneis, danoys ( < Latin Danēnsis); and the late Dansk directly < Danish.
