Etymology: < post-classical Latin Alemanni, Alamanni, plural noun (see Alemanni n.) + -ish suffix1, after German alemannisch, adjective (1554 or earlier designating the people, 1644 or earlier designating the dialect; also †allemannisch and (1726 or earlier) alamannisch, now specifically designating the ancient Germanic people) and Alemannisch, noun (1646 or earlier, denoting the dialect), respectively. Compare early Middle English Almainish (see Almain n.).
