Compare Almain n.The semantic motivation of the name of the confederation of peoples is not entirely clear; most likely it was chosen to denote a newly-formed, broad alliance of peoples which went beyond previous tribal boundaries. A confederation of Germanic peoples originally occupying southwest Germany between the Rhine, the Main, and the Danube, and later parts of Switzerland and Alsace.The Alemanni are first mentioned in the 3rd cent. a.d. in Greek sources (see the etymology). At the end of the 5th cent. they were conquered by the Franks and their territory annexed to the Merovingian (and later Carolingian) kingdom.
