单词 alemanni
释义

Alemannin.

Brit. /ˌaləˈmani/, U.S. /ˌæləˈmæni/
Forms:

α. Old English 1700s– Alamanni, 1700s– Alamani, 1700s– Allamanni, 1900s– Allamani.

β. 1500s 1700s– Alemani, 1500s– Alemanni, 1700s– Allemani, 1700s– Allemanni.

Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Alemanni.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin Alemanni, plural noun (4th or 5th cent. in Jerome; from 9th cent. in British sources; also Alamanni (4th cent.); compare Hellenistic Greek Ἀλαμανοί , plural noun (3rd cent. a.d.)) < an unattested Germanic compound < the Germanic base of all adj. + the Germanic base of man n.1 Compare Old High German Alaman , noun, denoting the people collectively (glossing post-classical Latin Alamanni , plural noun; German Alemanne , (now denoting only the confederation of Germanic peoples) Alamanne ; in Middle High German apparently only in sense ‘German’: see Almain n. and adj.), Middle Dutch Alemannen , (in late sources) Alemans (plural nouns) Alemanni, also Germans (Dutch Alemannen (plural noun) Alemanni). Compare Almain n.The semantic motivation of the name of the confederation of peoples is not entirely clear; most likely it was chosen to denote a newly-formed, broad alliance of peoples which went beyond previous tribal boundaries. See further the discussion by H. Kuhn in J. Hoops's Reallexikon der germanischen Altertumskunde (ed. 2, 1973) I. 137–8. The word was apparently reborrowed in the 16th cent.; there is no continuity of use with the Old English. Compare (with different sense) Almain n. 1.
historical.
With plural agreement. A confederation of Germanic peoples originally occupying southwest Germany between the Rhine, the Main, and the Danube, and later parts of Switzerland and Alsace. The Alemanni are first mentioned in the 3rd cent. a.d. in Greek sources (see the etymology). At the end of the 5th cent. they were conquered by the Franks and their territory annexed to the Merovingian (and later Carolingian) kingdom.
