Etymology: Corresponds to Danish Daner, Old Norse Danir < Germanic Dani-z, plural, Danes, Latin Dani, plural. The Old English form was Dęne, plural (with umlaut), which would have given Dene in Middle English: compare Old English Denemearc in 11th cent., later Denmearc, Denmarc, in Old Norse Danmörk ( < marku), Danish Dannemark, Danmark, the Danish mark or country, Denmark.
1. A native or subject of Denmark; in older usage including all the Northmen who invaded England from the 9th to the 11th cent.
