Etymology: Alteration, probably after ale n. (with reference to the apparent use of the herb in brewing: compare e.g. quots. 1597, 1676) of hayhove n. (compare forms at that entry). Compare earlier hove n.1, tunhoof n.

Ground ivy, Glechoma hederacea, an aromatic herb that was used for the flavouring and preservation of ale before the introduction of hops. Cf. alecost n., hayhove n.
