Origin: From a proper name, combined with English elements. Etymons: dad n.1, and conj.1, proper name Dave.
Etymology: < dad n.1 + and conj.1 + Dave, pet form of the male forename David (see Davidic adj.), after the names of the father and son characters, Dad and Dave Rudd, featuring in comic short stories about farming life on a rural selection (see free selection n.), written by Australian author ‘Steele Rudd’ (Arthur Hoey Davis (1868–1935)) and based on his father's experience.The first of these stories was printed in The Bulletin (Sydney) on 14 December 1895; a collection On our Selection was published in 1899 and subsequently used as the basis for popular radio, stage, and film adaptations.
