Origin: Formed within English, by clipping or shortening. Etymon: Latin custos sigilli regis.
Etymology: Shortened < post-classical Latin custos sigilli regis keeper of the king's seal (frequently from 12th cent. in British sources) < classical Latin custos custos n. + sigillī , genitive of sigillum sigil n. + rēgis , genitive of rēx (see rex n.1).
Now historical and somewhat rare.
In England: (the title of) an officer of state having custody of the Great Seal (Great Seal n.1 1); = (Lord) Keeper of the Great Seal n. at Great Seal n.1 2a. Cf. Lord Chancellor n.
