1. A stake or post set up as the sign for a public house or tavern, originally having a branch or bunch of leaves attached, later supporting the signboard. Occasionally also (by metonymy): a public house or tavern. Also figurative. Cf. alebush n., ale-pole n. Now chiefly historical.
