Etymology: < German Airol (1895), apparently an arbitrary formation. Compare:1895 C. S. Haegler in Beitr. zur klin. Chirurgie 15 272 Dieses Präparat, Airol genannt (der Name hat keine weitere Bedeutung und dient lediglich zur Umgehung der langen chemischen Bezeichnung) stellt ein graugrünes, feines, voluminöses Pulver dar [etc.].In sense 2 apparently independently reintroduced (c1973) for a different and unrelated substance.

Pharmacology.

1. A greyish-green powder consisting of a basic iodide and gallate of bismuth, used chiefly as a topical antiseptic, either in solid form or as an ointment. Chemical name: bismuth 3,4,5-trihydroxybenzoate hydroxide iodide; BiC₇H₆IO₆.
