7. D notice, short for Defence notice (see quot. 1967). Hence D list, a list of D notices currently in force.The Services, Press and Broadcasting Committee was set up in 1912 as the ‘Admiralty, War Office and Press Committee’. Its main function is to give guidance to the press, etc., about matters which, in the interests of national security, should not be publicly disclosed.
