Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: custard n., apple n.
Etymology: < custard n. + apple n.
1. The large, fleshy fruit of any of various trees of the genus Annona (family Annonaceae), having a yellowish to brown reticulated skin, dark bean-like seeds, and sweet white to orange pulp with a flavour resembling that of custard. Later also: the similar fruit of Asimina triloba (family Annonaceae); = pawpaw n. 2b. The custard apple (genus Annona) is also called bullock's heart, cherimoya, sour-sop, sweet-sop, or sugar-apple.
