Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: air n.1, landing adj.
Etymology: < air n.1 + landing adj., originally (in air landing forces ) after German Luftlandetruppen, plural noun (1940 or earlier, e.g. in a proclamation by Hitler dated 15 May 1940, the source translated in quot. 1940). Compare airlanded adj., earlier air landing n., and slightly later airland v.
Military.
Designating a military force which is transported to the field by aircraft.
