Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from French. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French curvité; Latin curvitas.
Etymology: < (i) Middle French curvité quality or state of being curved, curved portion of anything (both late 14th cent.), or its etymon (ii) post-classical Latin curvitas curvature, curvedness (4th cent.), crookedness of conduct (from 12th cent. in British sources) < classical Latin curvus curve adj. + -tās (see -ty suffix1; compare -ity suffix). Compare curvature n.With the figurative use in sense 2 compare Italian curvità (1619 in the passage translated in quot. 1620; a1519 in sense ‘quality or state of being curved’).
