Etymology: < crown n. + work n. With sense 1 compare the architectural uses of classical Latin corōna (see crown n.), and Middle French, French couronnement (see crowning n. and compare crownment n.). Compare earlier groundwork n. With sense 2 compare post-classical Latin opus coronatum (1631 or earlier), French ouvrage à couronne, ouvrage couronné (both 1635 or earlier), German Kronwerk (1631 or earlier).
1. Chiefly Architecture. Moulding used as a crowning decoration. Also: the uppermost horizontal member of a building or other structure. Obsolete.
