Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: crystal n., Latin oleum.

Etymology: < cryst- (in crystal n.) + classical Latin oleum oil (see oleum n.).In the early 1880s there were two different companies operating from central London addresses under the name Crystoleum Company (and engaging in litigation with one another). The earliest associated trademark application appears to have been in 1881.

Now historical.

A process for producing paintings on glass in which a photographic image is transferred to the glass and then coloured; a painting produced in this way. Frequently attributive.
