Etymology: Blend of air n.1 and abrasive adj. With use as noun compare abrasive n.Apparently coined by R. B. Black (see quots. 1945 at sense A., 1945 at sense B.). Compare:1945 R. B. Black in Jrnl. Amer. Dental Assoc. 32 956/2 The purpose of this paper is to describe an entirely different approach.., based upon a fundamentally different principle, which will be referred to throughout this paper as the ‘airbrasive’ cutting principle. The word airbrasive is an abbreviated combination of the words air and abrasive. It was coined because of the lack of a suitable existing word to describe this process.
