Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; probably modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: Czech adj., -ize suffix.
Etymology: < Czech adj. + -ize suffix, probably after German tschechisieren (1848 or earlier). Compare earlier Czechization n.
transitive. To make (something, esp. language) Czech in form or character; to assimilate (a person, ethnic group, or region) to Czech language or culture.

1894 Appleton's Ann. Cycl. 1893 64/1 The Young Czechs believe that the German element may be completely Czechized, and its languages excluded from official correspondence and reduced to a minimum in school instruction.
1927 Contemp. Rev. Feb. 173 Efforts to ‘Czechise’ place-names and to impose the Czech language.
1995 S. J. Kirschbaum Hist. Slovakia v. 97 After he moved to Prague he was also required to Czechize his family name by adding a diacritic sign on the letter r, thereby using a consonant that does not exist in Slovak.
