Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Cytula.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Cytula (Haeckel 1875, in Jenaische Zeitschr. f. Naturwissenschaft 9 406) < ancient Greek κύτος (see cyto- comb. form) + classical Latin -ula -ula suffix. Compare earlier cytode n. N.E.D. (1893) gives the pronunciation as (si·tiŭla) /ˈsɪtjʊlə/.
Biology. Obsolete.
In Haeckel's terminology: a fertilized ovum.
