Etymology: < alkali n. + -genous comb. form, after French alcaligène (1789 as adjective; earlier as noun: see alkaligen n.). Compare slightly earlier alkaligen n.With the form alkaligeneous perhaps compare -eous suffix.
Chemistry. Now rare.
Generating or producing an alkali, or alkaline properties.
