Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Partly also a borrowing from French. Etymons: Latin acadēmīa , -an suffix; French Academien.
Etymology: < classical Latin acadēmīa academy n. + -an suffix, originally via Middle French Academien member of Plato's school of philosophy (a1375; compare Middle French academien ‘of or relating to Plato's Academy’ (a1359 in a translation of Livy)). Compare earlier academic n. and later academician n., academist n.
