Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin cultrivorus , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin cultrivorus (1640 in a work title, or earlier; < classical Latin cultr- , culter knife (see coulter n.) + -vorus : see -vorous comb. form) + -ous suffix. Compare French cultrivore, adjective (1821 or earlier; now rare or obsolete).The noun cultrivore is also occasionally attested; compare the following earlier example, and also French cultrivore, noun (1748 or earlier; now rare or obsolete):1818 New Eng. Jrnl. Med. & Surg. 7 180 Three examples of cultrivores (knife-swallowers,—Trans.) on which the operation was successfully made, my honourable colleagues Des Genettes and Larrey saw, as well as myself, in the library of Koningsberg.

1925 Davenport (Iowa) Democrat & Leader 20 Sept. 24/1 Shapurgi is an East Indian who gives a cultrivorous performance on the platform while airing his bolshevistic doctrines. He would be no more dangerous to the United States, however, than any other sword swallower.
